Discover how easy and rewarding it is to make fresh sushi at home. In this hands-on class, you'll learn the fundamentals of preparing delicious Japanese-style hand rolls (temaki)—a fun, casual style of sushi that's perfect for entertaining or weeknight dinners.
Üma Li is the Executive Chef at BentoYa in Chattanooga with more than 20 years of experience in Japanese cuisine. After learning traditional sushi-making techniques while living in Japan in 2002, Üma went on to serve as a Team Leader Sushi Chef for Hana Group at Whole Foods in both Pennsylvania and Tennessee. In addition to leading professional kitchens, Üma has taught sushi-making classes and trained Food City culinary teams throughout Tennessee and Alabama, sharing authentic techniques and a passion for Japanese cuisine.
We'll cover the essentials, including:
- Selecting and preparing sushi rice
- Understanding the key ingredients and equipment
- Proper knife techniques for slicing fish and vegetables
- Rolling and assembling beautiful hand rolls
- Tips for sourcing ingredients and recreating everything at home
Each guest will prepare and enjoy a variety of hand rolls using fresh ingredients while learning techniques that can be used long after class is over.
